It was late November 1944. The end of WWII war was in sight. But one night, Lt. Fred Ringwald spotted some strange lights while riding in a night flight roaming the Rhine Valley. Neither the airborne radar nor ground control registered anything nearby. Then, in December, two more flight crews spotted glowing orange lights rising hovering in the sky. The objects were cigar-shaped and could disappear in the blink of an eye, ruling out even the most sophisticated rockets of the time.
After several sightings, the UFOs were nicknamed Foo Fighters, after the cartoon character “Smokey Stover” whose catchphrase is “where there’s foo, there’s fire.” Psychologists, aviation experts and conspiracy theorists have all weighed in on the explanation behind the foo fighters to no avail.
