You can’t throw a woodland party without a Scarlet Elf Cup. Found growing on dead/decaying wood, this bright red fungus makes the perfect receptacle for a fairy punch. Then again, if an elf offers you a drink in the woods, you should probably decline. Still, this funky fungus is still a sight for sore eyes and a source of food for rodents and slugs.
While Scarlet Elf Cup fungus is edible for humans, its earthy flavour isn’t for everyone. The texture isn’t like your typical mushroom, but they do cook well and can be used in stews if you’re into it. Eating aside, this fungus has been used as a medicine by the Oneida Native Americans to stop bleeding and promote healing.
