In 1785, Scottish doctors built a small, hand-cranked chain saw to speed up a tricky pelvis-widening procedure during childbirth. Only later did anyone think to try it on a tree. Sleep tight!

The Upiór walked so Edward Cullen could run. Long before vampires got cheekbones, Polish folklore had this: the troublesome dead returning physically, not drifting about as ghosts. Suspected revenants were exhumed and dealt with (staking, decapitation, or turned face-down so they couldn't dig their way out).
