Night of the Living Deck

A salesman wakes up as a bug and medieval England pays for its prayers in cake. A behemoth balance patch is on the way, but we’re keeping the lid on the cauldron until tomorrow…

Is it a fever dream? Nope, just a creepy week in CUE.

Here’s what you need to know.

‍Double, double, toil and trouble
Spookyfest lurches into week two, and fittingly the Horrible Halloween League boost has doubled to +100 Power (still climbing, muahaha).

This week’s summonings:

  • Spooky Event 1 breathes its last on Monday, so grab those final points
  • Spooky Event 2: Burn it Down! ignites on Thursday 15 October
  • Freaky Friday pack returns 16-18 October: 1,350 Gems, 200k Coins, 1 Limited Legendary, 2 Limited Epics, 4 random Weird World cards, plus a Card Back and Avatar
  • FREE Halloweenie Theme Pack is still up for grabs: grab your Avatar, Card Back, Deck Sleeve, 4 Emojis and 4 Taunts
  • Still lurking: the Halloween Arena, Halloween Collection Packs and the Séance Crafted Card Story…

Raise the deck
They may be haunted, but 4,000,000 Horrible Halloween cards won’t play themselves. The first reward  for the Community Challenge lands at 1,000,000, so stop what you’re doing, build your scariest deck and get playing.

‍A bad day at the office
Waking up as a giant insect is a solid excuse for a sick day, but Gregor Samsa’s first worry is missing his train to work. The doomed salesman of Kafka’s 1915 novella The Metamorphosis becomes a “monstrous vermin”, left deliberately vague. Kafka insisted the creature never appear on the cover. Publishers have put cockroaches on it ever since, and so did we.

‍Will pray for cake
Before trick-or-treating meant fun-size chocolate and tiny Spider-Men, there was souling. Around All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day, poorer folk in parts of England went door to door, offering prayers for a household’s dead in exchange for a Soul Cake. Don’t picture red velvet, though - a 1674 glossary records oat cakes. Yummy.

‍Coming your way this week…
Keep shrieking through Horrible Halloween, get it in writing with Documented, and lose yourself in Fiction and Fantasy. Graze with the Herbivores, drift through the Nebulae, and just keep swimming away from the Sharks!
