STICKY NOTE

“Need milk.” “Nibble’s vet appointment - 12.45pm.” “Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A.” We’ve all scribbled ourselves a little message or two on a Sticky Note. Shopping lists, bookmarks, messages for that person you like in chemistry class - the Sticky Note can do it all!

But it didn’t start out that way! In fact, it started out entirely by accident. American scientist Spencer Silver was trying to create a super strong adhesive at the company 3M in the 1960s when he discovered he’d actually made a low-tack adhesive instead. One that would stick briefly but wouldn’t bond to the surface. But he had no idea what to do with it! It wasn’t until one of his colleagues, Art Fry attended one of his seminars that real inspiration struck (or stuck, we should say). Fry needed a bookmark he could stick in his hymn book that would last between choir practices and thus the original sticky note was born. And what was it called? The “Post-It.”

…Well, it was actually called “Press and Peel” first but that wasn’t as cool an ending, was it?
