The Great Emu War card might be the most CUE card to ever CUE card. Read on to learn more about it!
Between World War I and World War II, a battle to reclaim land from an insurrection of rebellious birds took place in Australia. Known as the Great Emu War, this wildlife management operation was launched to tackle the rise in emus running amok in the Campion district. In 1932, the military was sent in with machine guns to make short work of the birds. But they underestimated the emus' resilience.
According to Major G. P. W. Meredith who led the (human) troops, the emus “faced machine guns with the invulnerability of tanks.” By the end of a month, some 2,500 rounds had been fired, but only a couple of hundred emus had been killed. No human casualties were recorded, but the disappointing result saw the project curtailed. Long live the emus!
