Toilets, titans and territorial disputes

‍

Big things brewing at HQ. We'll have more to share very soon. Until then, please enjoy a full house of fun facts. Or, at least, a flush.

Let's look at what's on the cards...

‍

Nothing like a bit of nominative determinism

Sir John Harington built the first flush toilet in 1596 for his godmother, Queen Elizabeth I. It took almost 200 years for anyone to improve on it, when Alexander Cumming patented the S-bend in 1775. Thomas Crapper gets the credit today, but he mostly just marketed it well. Oddly, his name isn't actually where we get the verb "crap" – he was just born with the right name for the job.

‍

Fear the mandibles

Were the Beatles bigger than Jesus? Probably not. But is the Titan Beetle bigger than Jesus? Again, no. It is, however, one of the biggest beetles on Earth, so let’s give it its moment. This Amazonian monster is roughly the length of a large smartphone. You can’t use it to make calls or access the internet, but its jaws are powerful enough to cut into human flesh. So, swings and roundabouts. And mandibles.

‍

Never open a competing shop

Few business disputes end with Billy the Kid, a Gatling gun and the author of Ben-Hur, but this particular bout of frontier capitalism escalated fast. The Lincoln County War started in 1870s New Mexico when John Tunstall opened a rival shop, got murdered, and his supporters (the Regulators) decided that was worth going to war over.
