Crouching mongoose, hidden anus
Found only in Madagascar, the fossa looks like someone crossed a cat, a monkey and a weasel, yet it’s actually more closely related to mongooses and civets. Its scientific name, Cryptoprocta, literally means “hidden anus.” Taxonomists had fun with that one.
Thor vs. Ageing
This week brings a new Limited Legendary from the world of Norse mythology. Elli's entire myth consists of humiliating Thor in a wrestling match. Arranged by the trickster giant Utgard-Loki as a magical test, Thor was invited to wrestle an old crone. He couldn't move her. She forced him to one knee. Only afterwards was he told: Elli is the personification of old age itself. Old age: one, thunder god: nil.
If a tree grows this much in the woods…
Is it even a tree?! The Great Banyan tree props itself up with more than 4,000 aerial roots that have thickened into trunk-like columns. This living wonder has survived major cyclones and barely flinched when fungal decay claimed its original trunk. It’s even outgrown the road built around its circumference. We get it, you’re resilient!
