Kendo

Technically, Kendo is only as old as super glue and the video tape recorder, with the All Kendo Federation being established in 1951.

Technically, Kendo is only as old as super glue and the video tape recorder, with the All Kendo Federation being established in 1951. However, this martial art is rooted in centuries-old Kenjutsu practices, encompassing all Japanese swordsmanship schools.

The "dan" ranking system in Kendo, ranging from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest), was adopted from a concept by Judo's founder, Kanō Jigorō. Only five individuals have achieved the 10th dan "kendoka" title.

Since the 1970s, the World Kendo Championships have taken place every three years, showcasing the pinnacle of Kendo talent in both men's and women's singles and team categories. Until 2006, Japan held an unbroken championship record. However, in a surprising twist, Japan's Men’s team faced a semi-final defeat to the USA, and South Korea clinched the final victory.
