The Technological Singularity - when artificial intelligence transcends human intelligence, and the abilities of computer programs become uncontrollable and irreversible.
For generations, scientists and sci-fi writers have mused over the idea of a Technological Singularity – a time when artificial intelligence transcends human intelligence, and the abilities of computer programs become uncontrollable and irreversible. It sounds scary, and Stephen Hawking did warn that if we weren’t careful, it would be the worst thing to happen to us – and the last thing.
Nevertheless, we continue to develop AI, because in the words of Albert Einstein, YOLO. Anyway, futurist Ray Kurzweil says it won’t happen at least until 2045, so by that prediction, we’ve still got a couple of decades before the robots rise up and enslave us all. Plus, if we’re lucky, climate change might get us even sooner!
