Xoloitzcuintle

Celebrated as Mexico’s national treasure, Xoloitzcuintles have been adored for millennia, with archaeologists revealing their presence going back 3,500 years.

Celebrated as Mexico’s national treasure, Xoloitzcuintles, affectionately known as “Xolos,” have been adored for millennia, with archaeological digs revealing their presence dating back to 3,500 years ago. Just one glance at this majestic dog, with its sleek, hairless body and piercing, soulful eyes, is enough to see why Xolo was revered by the Aztecs as sacred guides for the dead on their journey to the underworld.

Beyond their role as spiritual guardians, Xolos served the practical purpose of living thermal comforts, radiating their natural body warmth to their human companions. Despite being among the initial breeds to gain American Kennel Club recognition in 1887, these distinguished dogs remain somewhat of an enigma in the U.S., occasionally confused for the elusive Chupacabra due to their unique appearance.
