Fūma Kotarō

While a clan of ninjas might seem ominous enough, there's the legendary Fūma clan, led by the mysterious Fūma Kotarō who operated Kanagawa Prefecture in the late 1500s.

While a clan of ninjas might seem ominous enough, there's the legendary Fūma clan, led by the mysterious Fūma Kotarō who operated Kanagawa Prefecture in the late 1500s. Much of Fūma Kotarō’s life is shrouded in mystery but the legends we have of his escapades are something else. He was rumored to be part oni (or demon) at 7 feet tall, with a terrifyingly deep voice and…you know…just looking like an anime villain in general.

The Fūma clan were best known for their guerilla warfare and for being much more bold and brazen than many other ninja clans. They fought on horseback and were known as battle disrupters due to their unusual tactics. One of the most famous stories of the clan is the Battle of Omosu, where the Fūma clan entered the enemy camp at night and used smoke and all manner of chaos to frighten the enemy into attacking each other. This resulted in the enemy army doing more damage to themselves while the Fūma casually walked off in slow motion against a fiery exploding backdrop. Or, that’s how it looked in our heads.

Fūma Kotarō is also said to have had a nemesis in the shape of Hattori Hanzō, another legendary ninja from the time period. Hanzō once tracked down Fūma Kotarō and attempted to surprise him by approaching via the coastline, not knowing that Fūma Kotarō and his men had set oil down, preparing for Hanzō’s approach. Of course, as soon as Hanzō got close enough, Kotarō lit the oil, thus destroying the plot to take him down.
