Queen of the Night

It produces the most expensive flower in the world, but you’ll have to be really lucky to see the Queen of the Night cactus in bloom.

It produces the most expensive flower in the world, but you’ll have to be really lucky to see the Queen of the Night cactus in bloom. For only one night a year, this succulent produces beautiful white flowers that wilt by morning like the Cinderella of the plant world.

Like any Queen, this succulent should choose its royal court carefully. Because, although it can grow up to 10 foot tall, the Queen of the Night uses other plants for support. But wait: how can a flower that blooms only 6 hours in a whole year survive and reproduce? Bats, apparently.

Since the Queen only blooms at night (hence the name), bats are its main pollinators; the intoxicating smell and full-moon-esque appearance draw these nocturnal animals into its white petals.
